A Comprehensive and Data-driven Approach to Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrian safety is undeniably a major crisis in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports there were 6,516 pedestrians killed in traffic crashes in 2020, equivalent to one death every 81 minutes.

At Flow Labs, we recognize the challenges faced by traffic engineers when it comes to addressing pedestrian safety. We provide them with the necessary tools to understand and mitigate safety risks.

One of the significant obstacles in improving pedestrian safety has been getting the necessary data to know where the problems are. Traffic engineers have traditionally struggled to gather and integrate data from various sources, making it difficult to understand pedestrian behavior and risk factors. The Flow Labs platform streamlines this process by integrating Location Based Service (LBS) and Ped Push Button data with Connected Vehicle (CV) data. This integration allows traffic engineers to access a wealth of information to identify high-risk areas, analyze pedestrian volume, and assess conflicts with vehicle movements.

Another challenge in addressing pedestrian safety has been the over-reliance on pedestrian crash data. While crash data is valuable, it only provides insights after an incident has occurred. Flow Labs takes a proactive approach by leveraging AI technology to detect patterns, analyze trends, and provide actionable insights that enable traffic engineers to implement preventive measures and prioritize resources effectively.

By eliminating the need for extensive infrastructure modifications, we reduce costs and enable broader coverage across an entire region. This process accelerates pedestrian safety studies by months, allowing agencies to identify and address the highest-risk pedestrian safety areas across all their roadways.

Flow Labs is dedicated to providing traffic engineers with the right tools to understand safety risks and improve pedestrian safety. Together, we can make a tangible and positive impact on pedestrian safety, making our roads cleaner, clearer, and safer right now.
